MOJO
By Darlene Eliopoulos

GENRE: Drama, Fantasy
LOGLINE: When a promise is broken, a slave uses her spiritual healing powers against her manipulative owner.

SYNOPSIS:

Mama Pearl is a black slave who has lived on a plantation with Clara, the plantation mistress since they were young girls. The two women share an unlikely relationship filled with secrets, and governed by rules that only they understand. Mama Pearl uses the old world tradition of roots and herbs for healing. When an incident occurs that threatens both girls, Clara insists that Mama Pearl use her abilities for their protection. This action sets off a chain of events that will intertwine and change their lives forever. When Clara breaks her promise of freedom, Mama Pearl takes matters into her own hands. For over a decade the women are embroiled in a battle of wits, spurred by revenge and the “magic” of roots and “Hoo Doo” or “Voo Doo.” The influences of magic sharpen the atypical relationships within Mojo. As the story unfolds we meet a racially diverse cast, which provide the rich backdrop to a drama of life on this plantation and the unknown, via the possible influence of Mama Pearl’s Mojo spells. Where does the magic of Mojo begin and where does it end?
