GENRE: Crime, Drama, Historical, Other
LOGLINE:

A Scottish American woman and her cohorts take down the most powerful human trafficking kingpin on the West Coast of the United States to save thousands of Chinese slave girls in Victorian San Francisco Chinatown.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1911, Donaldina Cameron, 25, head of the Presbyterian Mission House in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and her interpreter, Anna Woo, 20, a former madam, endanger their lives performing raids to liberate girls from slavery. Meanwhile, Ling Soo, 14, a prostitute, vows to control her own destiny. But when Donaldina and Anna try to persuade Ling Soo to leave “the business” she refuses. Ling Soo doesn’t believe in love. Anna doesn’t believe a good man can love her because of her past. Donaldina wants to get married, but a previous broken engagement makes her not trust men. When Ling Soo’s fellow slave escapes the brothel and finds refuge in the Mission, their owner, the most powerful slaver in San Francisco, fights Donaldina and Anna in court and takes her back. Donaldina and Anna vow to put the kingpin out of business. But Donaldina struggles to get the girls, community and police to trust her. Meanwhile, a Chinese minister becomes interested in Anna, but she thinks she’s not good enough for him. When Ling Soo helps her friend escape again, her owner sells Ling Soo to a pimp in Los Angeles. Donaldina convinces the head of Chinatown’s police squad to gather evidence against the slaver. But when Anna convinces Ling Soo’s friend to testify against him, the slaver murders that witness. Devastated, Donaldina and Anna question their love and conviction for the girls, but the Chinese minister encourages them. They accompany the policeman to Los Angeles to convince Ling Soo to testify against the slaver. Undercover as prostitutes and pimps, the four gain Ling Soo’s trust and escape with her. The slave kingpin is convicted. The trial’s publicity and severe consequences scare other slave traders. Human trafficking in San Francisco virtually ends. The women celebrate their victory at the Mission House.

Wow - "torn from the headlines" drama - I can feel the tension just from the synopsis.
