When a valuable family painting goes missing, a shy 11-year-old boy must embark on a treasure hunt to retrieve it, and in the process, learns to speak up for himself.
SYNOPSIS:
A boy’s family’s antique painting is stolen at a garage sale. They think the painting is worth a thousand dollars, but they eventually discover it’s worth a million. The boy and his sister try to retrieve the painting through a “treasure hunt” winding through a flea market, an online marketplace, an antique store, and a high-end auction house.
The garage sale thief finds out the true value of the painting and makes a deal to sell it to a gangster private collector. But the thief’s wife unwittingly sells it at a flea market. The thief and the kids race to retrieve the painting from its various buyers. A lot of physical comedy ensues. Each buyer, in turn, finds out the true worth of the painting and all end up at the auction house bidding against each other.
The kids try to hide their hunt and the true value of the painting from their mom. They resort to lying and stealing. Eventually the mom catches on and ends up at the auction house also.
Each time the kids try to buy back the painting, the price goes up. They obtain money by selling their prized possessions, opening a credit card account, and “borrowing” their mom’s credit card. They learn the hard way that money isn’t free and that their family is priceless.
