donnie l. betts (lowercase is intentional) is a founding member of two theatre companies in Denver, Colorado, City Stage Ensemble and Denver Black Arts Company. He attended Yale School of Drama. His theatre performance credits include “The Gospel at Colonus” on Broadway with Morgan Freeman, “The Warrior Ant” at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) as well as many regional performances including “Spunk”, “Driving Miss Daisy”, “Home”, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone”.
Theatre directing credits include, “House With No Walls”, “Citizen” and “Skeleton Crew”, “Black With A Capital B for Curious, “Proof” , “Emperor Jones”, Porgy and Bess, “Zora”, “Slut Energy Theory”, Denver and Dallas and at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, The Mountain Top for which he received a Henry Award for Best Director. Plus, over 25 other productions. betts also recently received the John Madden Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award from CBCA and an Emmy for his film on Jeff Campbell. He is most proud of his work with Terri Nelson and Dr. Denise Leadon in keeping the legacy of Five Points and Blacks in the West alive by producing films on Dr. Justina Ford, Lincoln Hills, Five Points, Lt. Col. John Mosley, Edna Mosley to name a few and his award-winning film on Dearfield Colorado. He is currently working on a film “Stop Resisting” a look at the use of force in America starting with the Aurora Police Department.
His production company, No Credits Productions has produced the award-winning audio drama series “Destination Freedom, Black Radio Days” for the past 21 years.
