THE DOOR CREAKS
By Collins White

GENRE: Independent, Horror
LOGLINE:

Moving to a rural church town with her mother and brother to live with her new step-father, Lilly thinks she’s about to start a fairy tale life, but when her forbidden love (a respected member of the church) shows his true colors, she finds herself in a prison of abuse and manipulation that she must endure for the sake of her brother while fighting for a chance to escape.

SYNOPSIS:

Lilly is a 14 year old Girl with a vivid imagination, and frequently writes fairy-tale stories based on her real life that she reads to her younger brother Luke as bed time stories. Matt is a 40 year old man and Lilly's step father. When Lilly and her brother and her mother all move into Matt's house to start a family together, things quickly begin to fall apart. Despite having the respect of the church as an elder, the town as a wealthy accountant, and his wife, Matt harbors a dark passion, one that will envelope both Lilly and her brother in a prison of abuse.

While Lilly's mother works nights, Matt makes advances on Lilly, and grooms her until she believes he loves her and would leave her mother for her. One night after a heated exchange between Lilly and her mother, she turns to Matt in a childish attempt at seduction that backfires in a horrible way, leading Lilly to understand that her relationship with Matt is abusive. When she tries to end it Matt places up barriers that prevent her from seeking help, or escaping his abuse.

Unbeknownst to either Lilly or Matt, her younger brother Luke, witnessed enough of the abuse to start imagining the fairy tale bed time story Lilly has been telling her is in fact real. When Luke asks Matt about the fairy tales, and reveals cursory knowledge of what is happening, Lilly's abuse is escalated and Luke also becomes a victim.

This makes Lilly realize she has no choice but to escape. She tries to get help from her mother, but she is oblivious to Lilly's plight. In a last desperate attempt she reaches out to the youth pastor of the local church, who had expressed his desire to be helpful to Lilly if she ever needed it, despite also being Matt's best friend.

In the climax, the church is determined to protect itself from a scandal, despite the youth pastors insistence that the churches priorities should be protecting its children. Determined to make a stand, the youth pastor looses his job for a chance to save Lilly and Luke.

In an tense scene that is overlapped with the conclusion to Lilly's fairy tale, Luke and Lilly escape the house and run into the woods, where the Youth Pastor is waiting. After a moments hesitation he chooses to protect the children and ends up shooting Matt in the shoulder.

In prison, Matt confesses to his wife all his crimes, and puts a new, darker shade on the fairy tale that Lilly has been writing. Before we end, he continues his manipulation of the family by demanding that Lilly's mother tell him she loves him. Before she can give an answer, we fade to black, leaving the audience to come to their own conclusions.
