In Bangladesh le donne, senza alcuna possibilità di un'occupazione retribuita ufficiale, tragicamente emarginate sul piano lavorativo e svantaggiate sul piano economico e sociale, in un regime di isolamento fisico e psicologico, con storie incredibili di soprusi e violenza, costituiscono la maggioranza dei poveri. Le donne dei villaggi rurali, isolati da sempre, producono pregevoli oggetti artigianali da rivendere, ma la distanza dalle città e la mancanza di risorse economiche, tali da non permettere loro di intraprendere una qualsiasi attività produttiva autonoma, rendono inevitabile il ricorso al credito gestito da usurai locali. Il fenomeno è talmente diffuso e socialmente accettato che neppure chi lo subisce si rende conto di quanto le sue condizioni siano opprimenti: essendo debitrici nei confronti del commerciante che fornisce loro le materie prime, devono rivendergli il prodotto finito al prezzo da lui imposto che supera di pochissimo il costo del materiale.
