OPIA (2016)

Opia n. the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable—their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque—as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there’s someone standing there, but unable to tell if you’re looking in or looking out. This is a personal film for me. It shows my personal struggle with identity. For a long time, I didn't know where I belonged or who I was. I wasn't sure whether to act "normal" or show the world who I really was. I didn't want to separate my dark side from the light. Most people would want to just show the light, but for me, you're lying to yourself and to others when you do that. People always told me, "Be realistic with your life. Don't follow filmmaking as a career. There's no guarantee." That might true, but at least I feel alive, free and happy doing it. I know some people won't understand me as a person. I know some people will be jealous of me following my dream. I know some people will think I will fail in following my dream. If I do, I failed better than most. I know what I do in film and how I act in person will offend some people, but remember this: Just because you're offended, doesn't make you right.

Absurdities

Absurdities is a multimedia installation piece which shows several scenes of an Asian woman on a deserted beach (Dungeness) searching for something, finding a plant and eating it at a table in front of a wrecked boat. The film tries to challenge and disturb viewers with its subject, use of different visual media (16mm film and digital video), multiscreens and performance art. The content of the film is comprised of three different scenes; the opening scene moves up on the woman who is looking for something by a shack on the deserted beach. She finds a pot of flowers buried in the stones of the beach. There is then a scene of her eating petals from the flowers at a table by the boat and we see that she is wearing lipstick which is painted in the shape of a square. The last scene shows her looking at the camera and smearing the lipstick off her face – maybe to show her defiance at the normal conventions of being a woman such as wearing lipstick. All these scenes have some absurd elements such as the way of her wearing makeup or trying to eat flowers with cutlery.

LEFTOVERS

Leftovers is a short experimental fiction film which looks at a woman artist who lives in the country but also has lost something in the city. She is alone but is still searching and creating. The film tries to capture the emotional state of a middle-aged artist who is on the edge in terms of youth and age, city and country, depressed and happy. The film also has a documentary feel but the character is fiction and the film builds up a picture of who she is through her journey and art.
