Welcome to the final Writers' Room webcast of 2019! The last broadcast of the year was the Write Now Challenge: Plot Twists! This month you were challenged to write a scene in 3-5 pages that tells a story with a major plot twist. This is no easy feat and perhaps the most difficult challenge we have faced to date! There is also a special question and answer session during the broadcast, where members asked me anything about the industry, the craft, the business, your screenwriting career or any other burning questions you may have!
In this challenge, members were asked to pick their favorite antagonist or villain from film, television or literature and in - ONLY ONE PAGE - write a monologue from his or her point of view. The participants could frame this as an interrogation, a negotiation, a confession, or a conspiratorial conversation. Most importantly, writers has to make sure the scene had conflict, and the character's point of view in his or her voice. During the webcast we heard from some of our favorite protagonists, including Loki from the Marvel Universe, Terence Fletcher of Whiplash, Commodus from Gladiator, Jack Bynes of Meet the Parents, and Lex Luther of Superman among many others.
Every great pitch starts with a great logline and every script you write has a perfect logline, it's your job to discover it. This month we challenged you to write, rewrite or polish your logline(s) and send them our way!
A first ever for the Writers' Room! Audrey Knox will critique the logline submissions she finds the most intriguing. Audrey Knox is a TV literary manager at The Cartel - a management and production company. Audrey staffed her client on the series "UPSHAWS" for Netflix. She also co-represents the Showrunner behind Mindy Kaling's "THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS" on HBO Max.
In this challenge, members were asked to write one side of a phone conversation. The challenge is to give us the full idea of the story, the conflict, the relationship between the characters, and the ultimate resolution. The key to this exercise is to make the stakes high! Can the writer phrase their character’s dialogue so that the phone call still makes sense - and give us the exposition we need? During this webcast we received a number of fantastic entries that spanned genres, including Rom Com, Thriller, Drama, and Comedy, and more!
The Stage 32 team brings you an exclusive special event you won't find anywhere else! Christopher Lockhart, who works with Denzel Washington, Michelle Williams, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and more is known around town as the logline whisperer. He will be breaking down effective loglines and will be listening to logline pitches to critique and help yours get better! You don't want to miss this opportunity to learn from an industry heavyweight like Chris, exclusively in the Stage 32 Writers' Room!
