Introduce Yourself : Faith Based Thrillers by Dan Olds

Dan Olds

Faith Based Thrillers

My name is Dan Olds and my goal is to expand Faith Based films into other genres besides dramas. I've written a couple of very original faith based thrillers. One of them ("Vanishing Place") received a "Recommend" from coverage from WeScreenPlay. The other one ("Deceiver") was just sent in for coverage. I plan to enter both into several Thriller/Horror screenplay contests. Anybody else interested in Faith Based Genre Films?

Tennyson Stead

Sounds like a noble goal, Dan! If you find any avenues for scripts like this, I'd love to hear about it. I've got a faith-based science-fiction space survival story called St. Augustine's Ice that can be produced on a modest budget, and I'd love to find a good home for it.

Richard "RB" Botto

Faith based is red hot and about to get hotter. Jason has the ear of some of the best in the business right now....If you haven't connected with him yet, do so at j.mirch@stage32.com - Best with the projects, my friend.

Dan Olds

Hi Tennyson - have you had coverage on your script? I have found that really helps. Also have you seen the recent faith based sci fi move called "Assassin 33 AD"? It's a time travel sci fi movie. Thanks RB for connecting me with Jason. I will contact him.

Dan

Richard "RB" Botto

Most welcome, Dan.

Tennyson Stead

Dan Olds, I have not - but I can obviously guess at the concept. Was it any good?

John Ellis

I watched the trailer for Assassin 33AD -

As a general viewing audience person - meh.

As a Christian (which I am) - bleh.

Onwukwe Abraham Ogonna

Warmly welcome, Dan.

Dan Olds

Assassin 33 AD was ok - Once it got going it was kind of fun. Here is part of my "review" of the movie which I sent to the movie's promoter (Lori Twichell):

Well my wife and I rented and watched "Assasin 33 A.D." yesterday - we found it fun and entertaining and somewhat cheesy in parts and somewhat touching in other parts. It was a bit hard to follow so we just had to kind of go with the flow of the movie.

Linda Walton

Hi Dan. Very interested in Faith based films - in different genres. I've written one which is a musical film about Nebuchadnezzar/Daniel in Babylon with fab songs from a God-fearing South African. It's currently being read by two producers. I've also written an animation which is an allegory of the Easter story set in the world of butterflies.

Lisa Johnson Mitchell

I have a friend Vickery Eckhoff, who has a faith-based TV pilot that is amazing. I think you can put her name into the search field and find her. I absolutely love her concept. It's a fresh, irreverent take on navigating the dating world as a woman of faith.

Cheri Nelson

I have Started Faith based writing also. I am curious how you are integrating fair in horror or so-fi? I have An idea, but curious in others.

John Ellis

Lisa Johnson Mitchell is that "Modern Christian Spinster"? It sounds like it would be fun!

Teresa Barber

Hello Dan Olds, I'm in the middle of writing a faith-based drama now, but a thriller sounds fantastic. Good luck with your endeavors!

Lisa Johnson Mitchell

John Ellis - YES! That's my dear friend, Vickery Eckhoff's brainchild! It is HILARIOUS and so timely, so needed these days

Felix Agyeman Boahen

YH... I have many on the desk; "THE WOE OF TRUTHFULNESS"... And "ELLOHIM"- action/adventure... I've got "WITNESS OF THE TRUTH" too in the queue..

Tony Gonzalez

Hey Dan, good on ya! Oh yes, I do faith-based films. Did well in Kairos and other Christian screenwriting contests. Have an edgy road-trip script in that genre. If you want any feedback, lemme know. Glad you're getting those positive recommends!

Dan Olds

Coming back to this thread after 7 months. I got a chance to pitch my thriller "Vanishing Place" to "Provident Films" today which is one of the big ones. I think that there is a future market for faith based films that are not just Inspirational Dramas. I love watching an Inspirational Drama just as much as anyone but there should be a future in faith based genre films like Thrillers and Comedies and Horror and especially Comedy Horror.

John Ellis

Dan, how did the pitch go? Was it through Stage 32?

Peter Mahan

Tony Gonzalez, I noticed the words "edgy road trip script" in your comment and knew I had to make a contact with you. I have written a faith-based script with many "edgy" situations :-)

Dan Olds

The pitch was limited to 5 minutes and was through attending the ICVM (International Christian Visual Media) conference. I think the pitch went well and I'm waiting to receive the release form.

Richard "RB" Botto

Dan, definitely send Jason Mirch, our Director of Script Services, an email. I can guarantee he will have some very helpful insights into who is currently looking for this exact kind of material. You can reach him directly at J.Mirch@stage32.com - Tell him I sent you over. Cheers.

Jason Mirch

Hey Dan Olds - Did you know that we have one of the most renowned producers of independent faith-based films working directly with Stage 32 writers? His name is Brad Wilson. He was actually hosting a Stage 32 pitch session just today. Feel free to reach out to me at j.mirch@stage32.com and I will give you some more insights.

Dan Olds

Thanks Jason - I sent you an email.

Shadow Dragu-Mihai, Esq., Ipg

Dan Olds By "faith based" do you mean strictly "protestant Christian" or "evangelical Christian" films? For instance, what about a film about a disciple of Islam who discovers the immanence of Allah? Or for that matter, an initiate of Haitian Vodun who copes with the tragedies in her life by learning how to rely on her faith? I am not being flip, I am serious as I consider my examples to be "faith based" films.

Peter Mahan

Shadow, I am a Christian but would definitely appreciate seeing those who are on other journeys.

Tasha Lewis

Interesting concept Dan Olds! Will make them more diverse.

Shadow Dragu-Mihai, Esq., Ipg

Peter Mahan I like to hear that!

Peter Mahan

I read the autobiographies of Malala Yousafzai and Salman Rushdie and thoroughly enjoyed them. It's so important to me--and so interesting-- to see the common humanity in every people.

Paul D. Schad

Hi Dan. You may want to enter your projects into the International Christian Film Festival which will be held in May in Orlando, FL - the ICFF is the largest Christian film festival in the world.
