I am pleased to join the ranks of fellow filmmakers and writers. My feature, A Feral World was recently released on VOD. It's a sci-fi drama that Gravitas Ventures thought best to market as a horror film... okay, but it's not. I was happy to have a distributor at all so I am simply stating that here, not to them. Now I've completed a new screenplay, and this one is a black comedy in the vein of a Coen Brothers movie. Hoping to make this next summer. This screenplay is getting a table read at the Orlando Film Festival on Nov 1st. But while all this is moving forward, I am pondering what I should work on while I live in development stasis. Nice to meet you all.
whats a VOD? How long is the movie? How do I see it?
Hi Billy, VOD is Video on Demand... like Amazon, iTunes, Comcast... You can see it on those platforms. Just search 'A Feral World'. - upon can also rent it on iTunes and Vimeo if you don't have those others.
I'll try looking for it thanks

David Liban, You have my attention. I am curious about the reasoning behind the distributor choosing horror. Sales motivated? Or, content motivated?

Teresa , once you sign over control of your film to a distributor, they have control of how they will market it and they don't really consult with the filmmakers. I have to believe they have more insight on marketing and reach. They've been doing this for many years. Also I know they want to make money with the film too, so I have to trust their decisions. AND... Horror sells better than sci-fi drama... I suppose? At least that's what I learned when I last went to AFM. Drama was a word that was clearly looked down upon. In truth, I fear that people who will decide to watch the movie will be mislead and might not like the movie because it was sold to them as a horror movie, and since it's not that may hurt the reviews it receives from those viewers. In any case, I am very fortunate to have a distributor who is honest and respected, so I do my best to support their efforts. And for bettor or worse, it's finally out of my hands. After all this time making that movie, I am pretty relieved I can let it go and move on to my next project. I was thinking I would have to do self distribution, and that's quite the endeavor if you're going to do it right.
