Joshua Young

Shows that have more than one camera aren't necessarily multi-cam. Parks and Rec, The Office, Modern Family are all considered single camera show despite the fact that they have multiple cameras filming at the same time. A Multi-cam is a static set mostly, a lot of times with a live audience, but mo...

Nadejda Kolpacoff

Hi there from L.A!

Luiz Antonio Kotrych

Seinfeld has some of the most iconics characters of all time! The series about "nothing", a great masterpiece!

Lucinda Newcomb

oh my goodness... had no idea why i loved Seinfeld

Lucinda Newcomb

now i know

Daniel Stuelpnagel

Absolutely .. George Costanza was first person I thought of as the cause of his own suffering, schemer but incompetent, "ladies man" wanna be but a shlub .. on and on ... yup laughing at the deep flaws :( :)

Jay F Servedio

bad things happening to bad people = gold

Luiz Antonio Kotrych

Seinfeld has some of the most iconics characters ever! The series about "nothing", a classic worth do watch again even today ^^

Irene Reis Leite

Watching Seinfeld for the first time I started to think of it as it's all just one person and the 4 characters are like all 4 personalities in one - like multiple personality. I don't know. That was thought that popped in my mind after watching a few episodes...

Ivy Kirera

George lacks self confidence that often puts him in embarrassing moments

Lucinda Newcomb

lol mean to children lol dont do that

Renée Brack

George Costanza = Daffy Duck - Jerry Seinfeld = Bugs Bunny

Hollie Michelle Harper

I still remember the time George shoved his way out that old folks home in the middle of a fire

Kimo Koshi

Moral bankruptcy aside, George is the character who would probably feel most at home in I Love Lucy. (Speaking of, if you want a show where the characters cause their own suffering...a hundred t

times in a row...)

John Garofolo

Hi everyone, just took a minute to say hello. I'm from Oak Park, CA

Daniel Stuelpnagel

He's very relaxed and personable, not surprisingly, really enjoyable yet focused and informative, love it, this is great detail for those of us who write features but have yet to write for episodic TV format.

Paola Canturini

I "purchased" this webinar a week ago but just now I've register, after already beginning watching the webinar. And it doesn't appear in purchase history!

Lucinda Newcomb

Two weeks ago I pitched to an amazing writer/executive producer, wrote three episodes of GOT and an Oscar nominated movie. She told me my story tonally ... not funny... used MOONLIGHT as a comp so I was thinking this topic--comedy--not so relevant for me right now but I think this is extremely helpful in some essential understandings that are relevant across all genres.

Iann Yanes

I think the slides are not passing with the speaker :O

@artwasem lol i had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get into live lounges during initial broadcast until today.

Nil Unerdem

what about "and she hates sandwiches". it's a hat on a hat but kinda funny :-)

Kenyon Long

This is all gems! Love it

Corinne Friesen (Lovarra)

Nils Underdem`s comment: what about "and she hates sandwiches". it's a hat on a hat but kinda funny :-) Yah! A chaser joke. Its like a dessert on a meal of a main joke. Makes it more satisfying.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hollie Michelle Harper - the "K" sound makes the statement funnier in dialogue. If you are torn between two synonyms, chose the one with the "K" sound. Not stone, but blocK. Not head, but Cabeza. Not hit, but knocK.

Clara Wong

This is one of the best screenwriting webinars I've attended, and it's not ended yet. So much invaluable knowledge is being shared and Vijal is such a great presenter.

Kimo Koshi

My favorite "episodic show" joke -- The Simpsons' "real Principal Skinner" episode, where at the end (after Springfield collectively renounces the Earth-shattering revelation that "Principal Skinner" isn't who he says he is), someone notes that they will never speak of this again.

Achickwitbeatz TheProducer

This has been so informative!

Jennie Roberson

A good example of a character evolving and then devolving is Nate on TED LASSO - SPOILERS getting built up to become a coach in Season 1 and then betraying (and graying) the team in Season 2

Purity Ndung'u

@Jennie that's a great example...I loved how that arc played out.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Agreed, @Jennie - and I love how that is SPOILER opposite from Jamie's arc, where he leaves and comes back.

Do Character arcs work in Episodic shows? I feel like its the beginning of the end of an Episodic series, because that eventually drops the original dynamics that made it work. @Corinne, arcs work in episodic shows for the episode they arc in. Going back to The Simpsons and its 30+ year run, Bart and Lisa learn to love each other all the time...and then go back to getting on each others' last nerve. (Ditto for Homer and Ned, even.)

Joey Bagtas

^ yes! Loved that show and the fact that they didn't really change too much for the better or worse

Lucinda Newcomb

So much great info and great teacher too

Sonja Dumas

We look forward to their personalities clashing as they confront their challenges. They were so consistent in their quirks; we knew who was the strategist, the naive one, the sexpot, the manipulator.

Question: do you have any tips for the logline of the pilot? Thank you!

Kim Ortiz

Are cold opens still necessary for comedies?

Lucinda Newcomb

id def watch Space Twins. and im actually not a big showwatcher. have missed more shows than anyone ever trying to write scripts ever

Abhishek Bharadwaj

Logline is how long for comedy shows

Su Sol

Kim Ortiz

Are cold opens still necessary for half hour dramedies? Also, when there's a show like "Harlem" or "Insecure" that have four friends but are written as half hour dramedies, is it important to build B & C stories about all of the friends in the the pilot. What is an effective way to do so?

Lucinda Newcomb

mmm very helpful Q regarding B and C in pilot

Chris Ryves

That was Carl Reiner? I use that quote all the time.

Lucinda Newcomb

Chris Mack addressed same Q in his pitch webinar. International shows translate well even when specific to region.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Felt like i should watch Squid Games but did not want to watch it until hearing amanda say that.

Are shows with short episodes easier to sell? Are nowadays Multicam shows meant to be shorter?

Raiza Centeno

I am a person who lives with a physical disability, so the assumption is I only know about that, but m...

Thanks - if Vijal could look at this question after zoom: Any advice for turning a one character comedy play into a comedy TV show? I presume it’ll be single cam. Also best way / advice to learn how to write full pilot script if your used to writing smaller scenes

Abhishek Bharadwaj

Can you please provide certificate for these webinars or workshops

Corinne Friesen (Lovarra)

Your discussion about writing cross-nationally, like from Bohemia, there is the universal, human experience, but I often wonder how much international cultural differences in approach affect a story getting picked up. For example, how I would write to Canadians is different from how I would write to...

My favorite parts of Vijal Patel's workshop were the importance of clear characters and characters' dynamics, the fact that characters are always funny when they themselves are the cause of their own suffering, the exercise of wondering how characters would react in any situations, pairing opposites, the formula examples of Gilligan Island and Blackish, and the rule of three.

Shelley Coleman
