About Joseph

After years of writing long-form fiction and getting lost in a glut of words, I had a story idea at the worst possible time: in the middle of writing a graduate thesis, while also working. My life already had too much writing in it, so I decided to try to get that story out in the most concise format I could think of - a screenplay.

And there it was. This was the format I had been looking for, story boiled down to its barest essentials, the specification for a film yet to be constructed.

I keep the lights on and the fridge stocked by working as a data warehouse architect, sharing my time between Dublin and Tel Aviv, while building contacts and skills for a pivot into film. So far, I am learning that the management of ideas, budget, time, people, and people's egos, interests, strengths, and weaknesses in the end to end production of a film does not sound at all dissimilar to doing the same in the software industry. Currently, I write as it can be done solo, but I find myself increasingly drawn to directing as my career in data heads further toward being the vision-guy-slash-cat-herder. What once sounded too intimidating to learn doesn't anymore.

As for other personal things - I am American by birth, but relocated permanently to Ireland in 2013. I am transgender and gay, and on my journey through gender and sexuality, have hit nearly enough letters on the LGBTQ+ spectrum to get a bingo. I like to tell stories that aren't just queer in the sense of having some LGBTQ+ characters in them, but deeply queer, reflective of how we are all interconnected, interdependent, and inseparable from our political, social, and cultural environment. The possibility of reinventing one's life and one's self and the cost of doing so feature heavily in my writing; these themes have come from my experience as a trans man, but are universal to the human experience, and I strongly believe that they are among the most important gifts of wisdom that we as trans people have to share with the world.
