About Matt

MATT EMBER spent 15 years working on some of the most successful sitcoms in television, writing and producing Step by Step, The Hughleys, Grace Under Fire, The Drew Carey Show, Norm, Titus and Becker.

In 2004, he and fellow sitcom veteran Tom Astle began a string of five number one feature films whose box office has totaled well over a billion dollars. Their spec Failure to Launch was bought by Scott Rudin while he was at Paramount, and made a year later starring Matthew McConoughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bradley Cooper, Zoey Deschanel, Kathy Bates, and Terry Bradshaw. They followed that with the adaptation of Get Smart starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, and Bill Murray. Two animated movies followed -- Epic from Blue Sky/Fox Studios starring Colin Ferrell, Beyonce, Josh Hutcherson and Amanda Seyfried, and Home from Dreamworks Animation starring Jim Parsons, Rihanna, and Steve Martin. Their most recent live action movie was The War with Grandpa, starring Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman, Christopher Walken, Cheech Marin, and Rob Riggle. And they have just completed writing the sequel to Home, called… well… Home 2.

In 2019, Matt also returned to television, consulting for three seasons of The Conners on ABC (what Roseanne became after Roseanne immolated herself on Twitter).

He maintains a busy academic career, teaching private students as well as classes for Wesleyan University, NYU, LIU, Fairfield University, SUNY Purchase, the Westport Writers Workshop, and Stage 32 online (the educational partner of Netflix). He is currently on the faculty of the LIU MFA in Television Writing program as well as the Fairfield University MFA in Creative Writing program.

He also holds the rank of Master in the martial art of Kung Fu San Soo and has been teaching that since 1986.
