Manager Query Email: What Do You Include?

Some time ago, I took a course that covered the key elements of a query email to managers. Here’s what it suggested including:

• Catchy subject line

• Short but polite opening

• Logline

• Short bio

• Courteous call to action

For the subject line, I thought to include comps — something like “Guardians of the Galaxy Meets Zootopia.”

I’d love to hear your thoughts:

What other elements do you include in your manager queries?

To what degree do you personalize your query emails?

Maurice Vaughan

Hey, Leonardo Ramirez 2. I haven't emailed managers, but here's what I put in a query letter:

I think of a catchy subject line.

I like to start a query letter with "Hi, _________,"

I'll put something like "How are you doing?" or something catchy. Then I let the person (executive, director, producer, etc.) know why I'm emailing.

After that, I mention the logline. Some script leads tell you that the producers, companies, etc. only accept loglines in query letters, so I exclude a synopsis.

If the script leads say the producers, companies, etc. are open to more than a logline, I include a short synopsis. Sometimes I also put what's special/unique about the script (usually just one sentence) and a small paragraph about how many characters are in the script, how many locations are in the script, etc., but I like to keep my query letters brief, so I usually don't add those things. Producers, agents, etc. get a lot of query letters, so they don't have time to read a long query letter.

Next, I mention that a treatment and a pitch deck are available, then I thank the person for hearing my pitch.

I end the email with my name and contact info.

And I'm always experimenting with ways to write a query letter.

Great info Maurice Vaughan! How has this format worked for you?

Maurice Vaughan

I've gotten script requests and made connections, Leonardo Ramirez 2.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

That's awesome Maurice Vaughan - It reads very "down-to-earth" and yet professional. I really like it. And I agree...short is better.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Question Maurice Vaughan - do you include some kind of bio?

Maurice Vaughan

I used to include a bio, Leonardo Ramirez 2, but it made my query letters too long.

Leonardo Ramirez 2

Gotcha. Thanks so much Maurice Vaughan - great stuff!

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Leonardo Ramirez 2. Thanks. I like the "Guardians of the Galaxy Meets Zootopia" subject line idea. Thanks.

You're welcome, Leonardo Ramirez 2.

Göran Johansson

Keep it short, because that will minimize the probability that there is any typo, or something else the reader dislikes.

You don't need spend time writing a query letter anymore. Those days are over. These guys broke the mold. Look what I found: noqueryletter.com. I have 2 scripts submitted.
