Sundance Film Debut Writer Shares Writing & Networking Tips

Samantha Tanner debuted her first feature film at Sundace 2018 as a co-writer of the highly anticipated A BOY, A GIRL, A DREAM, (Directed by Qasim Basir, and starring Omari Hardwick and Meagan Good). A native of Chicago’s West-side, she is also an accomplished actress with a BFA in theater from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Samantha steps into this new unfolding of her career as a screenwriter with joy. Her film credits include: COUNTER CLOCKWISE, PAIN N LOVE, and NITE STALKER. She’s appeared in the web series' CHEETAH IN AUGUST - S2 (Amazon) and ROOMATES.

Getting a film to debut at Sundance is an impressive feat. For Samantha Tanner, it's a dream come true. But it didn't come without hard work and perseverance. When Stage 32 caught up with her at Filmcon, she shared a few tips on what writers need to do to get their own work recognized at renowned film festivals.

Her theater work includes: Intimate Apparel (Clarence Brown Theater - Knoxville, TN), Court-Martial at Fort Devens (Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre - Chicago, IL), Panther Burn (Victory Garden Greenhouse Theatre - Chicago, IL), No Place to Be Somebody (Chicago - IL), and As You Like It (Urbana, IL). Samantha is also Associate Producer on Qasim Basir’s film DESTINED starring Cory Hardrict, Hill Harper, La La Anthony, and Jesse Metcalfe.
