WEEK 1 – Introduction, Elements of a TV Series, Approaches to Historical Subjects, Managing Research and Budget

Topics: types and formats of television series, finding the story engine for your show, how setting, tone, themes and point-of-view affect your story, various approaches to historical / period subjects, setting philosophical guidelines, scope and levels of research, uses of source materials, generating contemporary appeal, and managing budget requirements.

WEEK 4 - Authenticity vs. Accuracy, Altering / Creating Characters and Story, World Building

Topics: striving for authenticity over accuracy, choosing historical and fictional characters, adding, altering and conflating characters, realism and relatability of characters, relationships between the characters and the world, multiple perspectives and complex relationships, revealing the interior truth of characters, and techniques of world-building.

  • Write a detailed description (around half of a page) on each of your series' regular characters.
  • Review how your character elements will be communicated in your pilot.

WEEK 5 – Pilot Writing Act by Act

Topics: effective teasers, establishing and introducing characters, types of character moments, challenges of writing exposition, setting up the “rules” of your world, setting tone and incorporating themes, creating an effective launch point for your pilot, focusing on conflict and stakes, increasing layers and complexity with subplots, scene order and causation, types of plot points, creating a series launch, and common pilot problems.

WEEK 7 – Writing Effective Scenes, Period Dialogue, and Conjuring a World

Topics: structure of a scene, building stakes, multi-function scenes that move the plot forward & reveal character & build the world, avoiding “dead” scenes, how to enter and leave scenes, moving from scene to scene using character motivations, writing visually, authentic & nuanced dialogue and the value of subtext, avoiding anachronisms, emotional scenes, and common scene problems.

WEEK 8 – NO CLASS - Consultations: Finished Pilot or Revised Series Elements & Outline (virtual one-on-one sessions)

This week will consist of one-on-one consultations on your finished pilot script or your revised outline and other written materials. Each writer will send in their written materials 48 hours in advance and will have a phone consultation for feedback.

A: Stage 32 Next Level Classes are typically 90-minute broadcasts that take place online using a designated software program from Stage 32.

Q: Do I have to be located in a specific location?
A: No, you can participate from the comfort of your own home using your personal computer! If you attend a live online webinar, you will be able to communicate directly with your instructor during the class.

You’ve heard that the opening pages of your pilot script are the most important – hook your audience early and they’ll be invested in your show, fall short and producers, managers and executives might not even finish reading your script. At many companies, your script will be handed off to a member of the development team whose job is to just read the first act, then decide whether to pass or flag your script for further consideration. Having a great first act isn’t just a good way to get your pilot noticed; it might be the only way. When you watch a pilot, though, whether on Netflix, HBO or ABC, it can feel like every show is so different, it’s hard to see a pathway to success. Or even if you master one aspect of your opening act, somehow it can still feel like you’ve not done enough. In a TV pilot, that crucial first act is the most challenging because there is so much you have to do really well, really quickly: you have to introduce your characters, set up your world, and launch your story. What’s more, the first act sets your pilot on solid footing – nail this section and the rest of the pilot seems to develop and flow easily. Get stuck on how to start, and you might never finish writing the pilot that could launch your career. You’ve probably watched outstanding pilots where 10-15 minutes in you’re already making plans to binge the season. What do all those pilots have in common?
