Coffee & Content: Making Movie Magic with Smart Locations & Preparation

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or simply dreaming up your next big idea, I’ve got some inspiring content to fuel your passion and keep you moving forward. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.

First up, I’m sharing a fascinating video essay from Vox: Why Your Favorite Movies Fake Their Locations. We all know movie magic shows up in the acting, the visuals, and the sound design, but there’s another trick that makes more films work than you might think: the location. From fake cities to fake snow, and “Colorado” being shot in Canada, this video pulls back the curtain on why location management is often about practicality over accuracy. It comes down to budget, weather, workforce, and that all-important word: incentives.

Vancouver, for example, has become a go-to for holiday movies and big-budget productions alike because it has all the right ingredients within a short drive and filmmakers are getting smarter about using every corner of a location to stand in for somewhere else entirely. It’s a great reminder that as storytellers, we’re always working within limitations and those limitations can fuel creativity. So whether you’re scouting for a short film or writing a feature set in a far-off place, think like a producer and stay flexible. The right location might be closer than you think.

Speaking of creative opportunities, Cannes Film Festival kicks off this week and if you’re attending (or dream of attending), I’ve got some advice for you. The first time I went to Cannes, it was about soaking it all in. Now, after nearly a decade of being the official education partner of Cannes through Stage 32, I prepare months in advance.

Cannes is a whirlwind. Yes, it’s glamorous, but it’s also one of the biggest business events in the world for filmmakers. Whether you’re there to pitch, network, sell, finance, or simply learn, your best strategy is to stay open, observe, connect, and keep showing up. Even if you’re not attending this year, start thinking about next year. You can hear more of my thoughts in this video.

What’s the most creative location substitution you’ve seen in a movie or TV show? Or, if you’ve shot something yourself, have you ever faked a location on a tight budget? Tell us your best tricks in the comments!

Very insightful Coffee & Content as usual! Could not agree more, it is ALL about the prep, and maximizing location benefits. Two examples, I shot 'Crossing the Bridge' (Josh Charles, Jason Gedrick, Stephen Baldwin) in Minnesota to double a pre-gentrified Detroit suburbs. Likewise 'The Upside of Anger' I filming in London, to double as Michigan suburbs for the then solidifying UK film tax credit. This was impetus and evidence, for me to work with the Governor and legislature to help write what became the highly successful Michigan film tax credit program. Sadly it was cancelled by a certain myopic politicians, to the benefit of Atlanta, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and the UK. Evaluating the screenplay for story, setting, and all the elements of the script for location filming is critical to planning and executing your production. As I breakdown a script for film budgeting and scheduling and film finance plans, location is key for likewise determining the film tax credit available, the crew depth and utilization, and support services. As with production, for film financing the key is always be prepared! Knock 'em dead in Cannes with that freshly tailor Tux @RB! \o/

I was really inspired by Vancouver RB and I loved that Vox video. Thanks for sharing. Who knows if I change NY for Vancouver for my screenplay. Have an amazing time in Cannes RB and shine your light out there :)**

Very timely share, RB! Especially in regards to location shooting, what with all the recent discussions about runaway production. Such a complex issue and there's really no one-size-fits-all solution. Producers need the flexibility to be able to keep budgets under control and oftentimes shooting in Canada or elsewhere makes perfect sense logistically as well as cost-wise. Have a great time at Cannes! Looking forward to making the journey there someday myself!

Hey, RB. I've been working on two projects and networking this weekend. How's your weekend going? "It’s a great reminder that as storytellers, we’re always working within limitations and those limitations can fuel creativity." You're right. Most of the spec scripts I write are contained stories, so I have to come up with ways to keep the reader entertained in one, two, or three locations, one actor (or two or a few), minimal or no CGI, no animals, etc. I thought Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx was filmed in the Bronx growing up, but I found out it was mostly filmed in and around Vancouver. Great advice for anyone heading to Cannes or planning to in the future!

I think they did something similar with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Geoff.

Maurice Vaughan what appeals to me is that with tax incentives we can do production in the UK, but could do post and VFX in Portugal. That could cut down on location costs, as we have seen by The Eternaut, locations can be scanned and then filmed in a studio.

Thanks for this RB. Have a great time at Cannes. My aim is still to get there with a film, one year. What are the differences between the Cannes and Venice film festivals, business wise?

Richard "RB" Botto thanks RB. I’ve liked what I’ve read so far, about Venice and they’ve shown a lot of cool films. It’s a very tempting festival to consider in the future.

They both have markets, Geoff Hall, so they're a little similar. Cannes has the jump on things being a bit earlier.

As always, it boils down to cost which is a great reminder for us writers to keep in mind. As for Cannes, yes I dream of going someday but for now, I hope that you, Amanda, Ashley and all connected to have a safe journey and a prosperous, fun time there. Looking forward to hearing how it went upon your return!

For my music video, I'm Standing Here, I needed both a dramatic rain scene and a snow scene to symbolize the passage of time. Naturally, the one time I needed rain in the Pacific Northwest... it snowed instead. Go figure. Not in a million years did I think the snow scene would be done first. So there I was, in the dead of winter (after the snow melted, of course), faking a rainstorm with a garden hose and freezing my face off in my backyard. I’ve never been colder in my life. Totally worth it—and no one ever guesses both scenes were shot in the same backyard. Movie magic on a budget.

More than half of the 100 scripts could be easily filmed in Canada, but a secret agenda of mine is to help bring the Hollywood film industry back -- so I've written several scripts that are specifically to highlight Los Angeles locations ("Miracle on Hollywood Boulevard," "The Robin Hoods," and "Antiques Road Heist." I love Canada, and I have vacationed there many times, but for better or worse, this is our home. I'll see you in Cannes someday, RB. Thanks for posting.

Hopefully those Cali incentives will get passed. Not THE answer, but at least better than what's in place now.

Thanks for this RB. I’m curious how you see this trend evolving as virtual production and AI-generated environments become more accessible. Do you think we’ll reach a point where physical location won’t matter at all—or will audiences start craving more authenticity again?

I don't think we're anywhere near that, Alexandra Stevens. And yes, I do believe audiences crave authenticity right now.

Love that Vox video! I've always wondered about the times they had to film those Christmas movies, how warm the actors and crew must be in the middle of summer. Especially when it's in the humidex of 35 to 40 Celsius. I learnt years ago that It's A Wonderful Life was filmed during the summer of 1946. No wonder Jimmy was sweating so much in some of those scenes in Pottersville.

I worked on the second season of the TV show Prison Break in Dallas, Texas. They were on the run that season, so we’re always in a different town, different state and not once were we story based in Dallas! I love the movie Magic of making a place fit the story, but it’s not the real place. It’s quite fun. It also seems like we often shoot winter scenes in the summer and summer scenes in the winter. Like trying to keep the actors breath from being seen when it’s too cold out! All fun.
