July Filmmakers Club Week 1: Setting Your Independent Filmmaking Goals!

Welcome to July Filmmakers Club, Stage 32 Community!

If you’re just joining us, here’s what you need to know: July Filmmakers Club is your month-long creative accelerator, designed to help you connect with fellow filmmakers, set clear intentions, and move your projects forward with purpose, in partnership with Blackmagic Design. Every week, we'll be sharing a new July Filmmakers Club blog packed with inspiration, resources, and a new creative challenge to keep you motivated and making progress.

Oh, and did I mention the giveaways? That’s right, we’ll be celebrating your participation with weekly prize drawings, including Stage 32 webinars, pitch sessions, consultations, contest entries, and more. At the end of the month, we'll be giving away FREE prizes from Blackmagic to lucky winners who participated throughout the full month.

This month is about action. And we’re starting where all great projects begin, with goals.

Understanding the Independent Filmmaking Journey

Indie filmmaking doesn’t come with a roadmap. It’s a journey of passion, grit, and creative problem-solving. One minute you’re scouting locations and dreaming big, the next you’re figuring out how to stretch a micro-budget and still feed your crew. It’s exhilarating and exhausting. And that’s why community matters.

Filmmaking can feel isolating. That’s why Stage 32 exists: to make sure no creative has to go it alone. Whether you’re directing your first short, assembling a festival strategy, or navigating distribution deals, there’s someone here who’s been through it or is going through it alongside you right now.

So as you set your goals this July, remember: You’re not doing this alone. The entire Stage 32 community is here to support you, celebrate you, and help you get where you want to go.

Why Goals Matter for Filmmakers

Let’s be honest, independent filmmaking is a beautiful, messy, unpredictable ride. Most of us are balancing our creative pursuits with day jobs, families, side hustles, or all of the above. That’s why goal-setting isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.

Goals help break down the overwhelming into the achievable. They offer a sense of direction when the path feels uncertain. And maybe most importantly, they remind you that progress isn’t always about giant leaps; it’s often made one small step, one hard decision, or one bold action at a time.

You don’t need to have every scene shot or every dollar raised this month to feel accomplished. You just need to move forward. That could mean writing five new pages, reaching out to a producer you admire, or finally hitting “post” on a behind-the-scenes photo. Your goals are yours to define.

The key? Keep it personal, practical, and progress-oriented.

Examples of Achievable Filmmaking Goals

Need inspiration? Here are a few bite-sized and bold filmmaking goals you can set for yourself this July:

  • Finish the first draft of your short film script
  • Watch and break down three films that align with your visual style
  • Research and apply to three upcoming film festivals
  • Build your pitch deck for a feature in development
  • Assemble a team for your next short or proof-of-concept
  • Book a Stage 32 Script or Career Consultation with an industry executive
  • Reach out to a DP or editor you’d love to collaborate with and start building that relationship
  • Share a reel, teaser, or scene from your project to start building an audience and ask for feedback

Remember, every major win starts with a single decision to move forward.

This July, my goal is to bring more attention to my fantasy story Salva Island by actively networking with filmmakers and producers on Stage 32. I’m currently looking for opportunities to develop it into either a feature film or an animated film, depending on the right collaboration. I’m also preparing a visual pitch to help present the world and tone of the story more effectively. Grateful for this community and excited to move forward!

This is great Ashley - thank you for sharing. I just found out that "Homeless" made quarterfinals in the Hollyshorts Script Competition so that was a bright spot for today. I've already created a pitch deck for the full feature version of it and plan to watch "The Book of Eli" again as I love the look of that movie.

Okay Ashley. I finished my short film Forgiving Retribution mid April. I purchased a marketing package from FilmFreeway that was sent out to over 1400 film festivals. The next day my Email exploded. I have submitted to over 130 film festivals and within a few days I was already being selected for festivals. It has now been 2 months and I have been selected for 14 Official Selections, and Have won in a number of other festivals, to include the Next Step Film Festival in Cannes, World Class Film Awards, Rome International Movie Awards, London International Filmmakers Festival, Accolade Global Film Competition and the New York Film Legacy IFF. I have posted a trailer that I am promoting on Youtube. My plans are to stay in the festival circuit for about a year, hoping for a distribution deal. After that, if no distribution is secured, I plan to release it to the public. Does this sound like a good plan for you with experience? Thanks for your comments...

@Mary Davis Inspiration is always with me. And in the drawer there are some things that I don't think need to see the light, but others do. Of course, I've been told that I should bring the light and that it can shine. We finished a script in February and started the project, but halfway through we got stuck due to some problems. I collected myself and took a breath to see the mistakes. Now I'm going to review the ones that are in the drawer.

I can't believe I almost missed this! So, 2 goals for July: 1) Engage on Stage32 more again. I have a habit of scrolling through posts and reading things, but not commenting as often as I should. That really needs to change. So I'm going to set aside time every Friday to have an hour dedicated to joining conversations (and watching a couple webinars I've purchased but haven't watched yet...) 2) Finish the draft of a pilot episode. I'm already about 15 pages in, and it's an hour-long episodic, so finishing by the end of July should be achievable! Good luck, everyone!

I've always found the task of making goals, daunting. I find it easier to address challenges. I think with challenges its easier to define the bumpers, this works, this doesn't, we have these tools, but not those. Where goals to me seem more ethereal. Anyway, I am looking forward to my students participate in 2 48 hour competitions in a month and kick-off a local horror competition called FrightFilm.

I'm excited to get back into vlogging but this time with intentions and storytelling in mind. I haven't created a vlog in about two years and when I was making it there was no pre-production. I'd just film my day and then stitch it together. This time around I'm going to be mindful, intentional and put thought into each episode. I'm also focused on quality over quantity. We are often taught to push as much content as possible without much thought as to what it looks like, it just "needs to get out there," while this hold some truth. I also believe preparation and planning can take your content from being average to something worth watching. I've also been in a funk for awhile so I'm excited to have a mindset shift and become more active in my day to day activity again and revamp some old passions that I let go of. Wish me luck!

I like how your address both the larger concepts as well as specific details. You've given us a lot to think about and a lot of tools to move forward. // One of the most important things to always keep in mind throughout the process is what is the "Soul of your Goal". If you get clear on that, it really helps keep everything else aligned and on course. // Good luck to all!

I'm sure Indie is a goal for others, I'm simply building a consensus which defines together thinkingvon a Planetary scale. Reality is a best teacher. I appreciate your insight and enjoyed the Indie read. I have several novel ideas to share which define a together feel as solution based fixes which do revolutionize and progress the human condition and natures healing.

Kind thanks Ashley for that wonderful synopsis of Indie really clarifies the purpose. When I'm creating I try to share the work as an enlightening exchange between minds and bring out a fair assessment to include positive thoughts for all who see my work as not just my own. To express the spirit of the work in words is my goal. In what fashion or theme genre etc are all important to understand.  I'm learning this now.Who knows I may become Indie...

Absolutely, James, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness behind your response. For many creatives here, the goal isn’t necessarily Indie as a label, but rather the act of actually making something, and doing it on their own terms. Retaining creative control, moving the needle forward without waiting for permission, that’s the heart of what it means to approach a project as an indie filmmaker. By treating your project as an indie film, you shift your mindset from waiting for someone else to greenlight it… to figuring out how to make it happen yourself. That’s an incredibly empowering place to work from, especially for stories like yours that are rooted in vision, healing, and meaningful transformation. I’d love to hear more about the novel ideas you’re developing! The July Filmmakers Club is all about pushing your goals forward, so you’re in the right place.
