Coffee & Content: CODA Script Breakdown & DRIVE Cinematographer on Visual Storytelling

Happy Sunday Creative Army!

First of all, congratulations to all of you who have already participated in our monthly Introduce Yourself Weekend! Thousands of connections have been made between entertainment creatives and professionals from every corner of the globe. Whether you are a long-time member, or brand new to Stage 32, take a moment to pop over to the Introduce Yourself Lounge and say hello before the end of the weekend. Now, grab some fresh coffee and let's dive into this week's content.

First up, our friends over at StudioBinder have a great video featuring interviews with cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel (Drive, Bohemian Rhapsody, X-Men: Apocalypse). In this video, Newton discusses visual storytelling and how he uses lenses, aspect ratios, and camera movements to tell story. You will see examples from Dog, Cherry, Three Kings, and more.

Next up, the Writers Guild Foundation has an amazing video with CODA writer/director Siân Heder. In this video, Siân and two WGF librarians breakdown the CODA script - specifically highlighting how she translated dialogue to American Sign Language on screen and what the translation process was like on the page.

As always here at Stage 32, we love to share stories and knowledge with our fellow film fans. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them! Tag them below! You can keep up with all of our content by subscribing to the Stage 32 YouTube. Thanks RB for sharing this WGA interview of Sian Heder's CODA script. This was an amazing story and interesting project. Gives me ideas on a few stories I'm working on. Onward and upward.

Thanks, Tom Sigel, for helping this writer understand a cinematographer’s toolbox. I know action lines with words like “dreamlike quality” put us on the same page. I was also impressed with CODA’s Sian Heder’s research into ASL as its own language, and her poignant script. I save it for dissection. Ha! Thanks for posting, RB.

Ooo, great finds! Lit Kilpatrick and I co-host The Coverage Report in the Stage 32 Writer’s Room where we breakdown both member scripts and produced scripts like CODA. What a fascinating discussion on turning ASL into dialogue! Thanks so much for the share, RB!

Thank you RB for sharing these great resources.  I taught a sign language seminar in my Dance for Young People Program annually in the Spring.  (Sign Language, Dance and Sign Language, French and Sign Language, Spanish and Sign Language, English and Sign Language). I would isolate my self each weekend prior for preparation by only signing all weekend.  Some good resources are aslpro.com and The Joy of Signing.
