Happy Sunday Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some epic content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee and let's dive in.

This week, I am thrilled to share a fascinating video from the Netflix Engineering team about how they take a movie from script to screen. This video gives a unique insight into how the promotions and engineering teams at Netflix help ferry their films from screenplay to streaming. They cover everything from casting, scheduling, and budgeting projects to what makes good poster art and how they market their films.

Netflix's Director of Creative Talent Development and Investment Christopher Mack gives the Stage 32 community over three hours of can't-miss insight on what types of projects Netflix is looking for and how to create a TV Pitch Document that shines.

This really shows how analytics have taken over the industry.  Most of the studios are doing the same since they are owned by corporations so numbers matter more now than ever.  Take this into consideration when you develop your content and want to market it to streamers.  Who is your audience?  If you can show them how you can drive your audience to their streaming platform then you will have a much better shot at licensing/selling your content to them.  I am developing marketing strategies along with my scripts and films I will produce.  The creative is the first part of the journey but also think about those following steps all the way through distribution and marketing.  Keep moving forward.

Yes, know your audience, where to find them and how to hook them....sell to them without them knowing you are selling to them...LOL.

This is a great post, Curtis.  Knowing your audience has always been vital - and btw, if your answer is "everyone", you're way off - but never more so than right now.  Also, knowing WHO makes or buys that kind of content is also so very important.  If you're not paying attention, reading the trades, and watching the trends, you're doing yourself a disservice.  Appreciate your contribution here.

I loved this look into Netflix's workflow, RB.  When I was making movies on VHS growing up, I couldn't even imagine the opportunities that exist now!

I see Netflix in a new light. The complexity of their task to continually deliver productions is startling, and the number of engineers and data managers needed to pull it off is staggering. It makes "screenwriting" look so easy by comparison. Way to go, Netflix!

Thank you for sharing this inside look!  This is amazing, I am ten minutes into this video and already learning so much great info about the Netflix development slate and pipeline, scalability and a very up-to-date business model;  "No fax machines!"  Taking copious notes and already figuring to watch this one many times to even begin to grasp this valuable inside look,  and seeing how scripts and IP fit into the overall production model on such a large-scale operation;  super cool!

Thanks for sharing, RB. When we watch Netflix, we see the movies and shows, but we don't see what really goes into making them (the same with any movie or show). That's why I enjoy behind-the-scenes videos. This video takes behind-the-scene videos to a whole new level.

Loved the "flight control" metaphor! Sounds like they a have great and supporting working culture in Netflix. Ice Latte is the next step before taking a Sunday long boarding trip on the sunny Berlin Tempelhof airport field. Thanks for sharing. Have a relaxing Sunday!

Harri-Pekka Virkki synchronistic while you are processing the "flight control" concept and actually boarding a flight at the airport; I love the shot in the video where they suddenly show the metaphorical planes multiply in huge numbers to symbolize the scale of Netflix' slate!

That they do, Harri-Pekka.  For a large company, there's much intimacy in the relationships and with how they approach the creative.  Been a pleasure partnering with them and making future plans.

The interesting thing about this video: that Netflix now calls the process of creating a movie "engineering"!
