Coffee & Content: How Phoebe Dynevor Got Cast in BRIDGERTON & How to Deal with Creative Burnout

Happy Sunday Creative Army!

I've got my coffee in hand and your weekly dose of content coming in hot - grab your coffee of choice and let's dive right in.

First up, the casting site Backstage recently did an interview with Phoebe Dynevor, the star of Netflix's smash hit Bridgerton. As you may have heard if you keep up with the trades (which I always highly recommend!), with over 65 million households having watched Bridgerton in it's first month - Netflix has already given the green light for season two of this lavish regency-era period piece. In this video, Phoebe talks about the process of auditioning in front of Shondaland founder Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy, Scandal), how she prepared for the role, and more.

Next up, the folks over at Film Riot have put together a helpful video on how to deal with creative burnout that we all feel at one point or another while working in the entertainment industry. As the CEO of Stage 32 and a working screenwriter & producer, I have a lot of plates spinning - and I often get asked during my Ask Me Anything's here on Stage 32 how I handle it all. This video from Film Riot is a great reminder to take time for yourself to reset and get back to your creative happy place. Thanks for the latest content, RB. Great take-home message from Phoebe Dynevor and Ben (Backstage) with regard to having, and displaying, hunger for a job versus desperation (which can of course be applied to writing as well as acting and so on). I was aware of Phoebe's family connections - being here in the UK myself, having watched both soap operas that her mum stars in (Coronation Street) and her dad writes for (Emmerdale). I also completed a production placement on Emmerdale back in 2012 and studied my Scriptwriting MA in Salford, Manchester (so I'm very much aware of Corrie, as it's known). Phoebe does also remind me of a young Kate Winslet... The content on creative burnout is very appropriate for a lot of us who are trying to produce content and get work 'out there' - it is reassuring to know I am not alone! It is definitely all about that work/life balance - I am currently dealing with corporate work vs my creative passion. The financial impact of 2020 events has led me to lean more on my corporate work, thus leaving less time for my creativity (which is upsetting as it is my passion) so I need to focus on how I can bring the balance back.

Most importantly, Kristy, it's about being happy in all pursuits.  Appreciate your post and contribution here.  Some very valuable insights!

Loved how Phoebe keeps a positive attitude -- and it shows in her work. I'm not sure you can teach "the sparkle in the eyes." I was happy to see how Ryan Connolly deals with "Creative Burnout" -- a balance in life is the key. As a writer, even during 2020, I haven't experienced creative burnout, but I do take short breaks to refresh, and I haven't stopped having fun. "Treat every day like a toy," is my motto. Thanks for posting, RB.

That's a sound approach, Tom.  Hopeful you've inspired others here that's it perfectly fine to step away, take a break and refresh as needed.

Ohhh, I feel so conflicted about the fact that she taped, then didn't hear anything for 3 months. As an actor when you fall in love with a role that you audition for, it can be best to just forget about it after the tape so you don't disappoint yourself even more by constantly refreshing your email. I try to only allow myself a few days after the deadline to let the waiting consume me.

Thanks for these, RB!  I always like listening to fellow actors' stories about their experiences.  It reminds me of how much we all have in common.

It's great to see Film Riot back in 2021! Having a break in creating is not being lazy. It's a part of the process as your subconscious mind works all the time. Balance is the key like RB wrote. Time to dive into the caffeine wonder land! Have a great Sunday!

"A time out to do nothing or be creative is always valid."  Love this, Katherine.  Appreciate you contributing and spreading those positive vibes.

The balance of juggling projects, thoughts, life and everyone’s expectations is real. A time out to do nothing or be creative is always valid. Best of luck with 2021 wishlist. ( and Phoebe is as sweet off screen as on)

With the new norm , we have to be more creative in finding our inspiration. Mine used to be beautiful locations. Now, Flash Backs, to use a film term, is the way to go and write. Thank you RB for the encouragement!

RB, looks like you’ll had a nice virtual meetup. Did you get a chance to review my PhD Project Case Study notes on Stage 32 and the illustration (thebreastcancersite.com)?

Thanks so much for this! So many golden nuggets! Two of my faves, find that balance and remember when you reset to create something for you. Throughout 2020 I struggled with that a bit. Then I figured what the hell, this is  "my" passion and I am in control. I took some time off and returned ready to create!

"I struggled with that a bit. Then I figured what the hell, this is "my" passion and I am in control."  I love this.  I love that you were aware enough to realize you were giving away control and that you took it back.  Bravo.
