Coffee & Content: Jordan Peele & Dev Patel Break Down Their Directing Processes

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? I have some content here for you that is sure to get the creative juices flowing, so grab your coffee, and let's dive in.

First up, in this video from Fandango, star and director of MONKEY MAN, Dev Patel, sits down with actor, director, and producer Jordan Peeling to discuss their different directing styles. MONKEY MAN is the first feature film that Patel has directed and Peele's production company, Monkey Paw, was behind the production. It's a great look at one director who created a path for himself in the industry behind the camera and now shepherds Patel on his own unique journey.

Next, I often hear from creatives how hard it is to keep plugging away and hustling when you're faced with rejection. The thing about rejection is, it's not only inevitable, it's NECESSARY for you to experience and learn from. In this video, I explain why you should embrace and learn from rejection in your own career.

As always, here at Stage 32, we love to share stories and knowledge with our fellow film fans. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them! Tag them below! It's interesting to get two different perspectives, one from an experienced Director and the other from an Actor turned Director who only has one feature credit. Great share!

Agreed. Although Dev has been on sets a long time, which clearly shaped his perspective. The lessons to be learned from his challenges with this project are myriad, however.

i think this also tells us that sometimes it just takes getting that one voice or perspective to help guide things forward - and again, how important every single person is to a collaboration - how one person really can make a difference (and i mean, yes, someone with a hollywood halo doesn't hurt) but remember, even Dev needed the help. and it showed up well past the final hour. good ole' Maya said it best - "You are never alone. You are stronger than you think." Stay true to your vision.

Love every word of this, Marsy Robinson. A personal community for growth, a business community (with some personal community assistance) to bring a project together.

Everything in life should be teaching us something and helping us move forward more clearly and stronger. I love your point that rejection allows you to grow. If we're always good at something and we're never challenged to push ourselves, to try harder, to think outside the box, then we're the best mediocre version of what we could have been. And who wants to just be good enough?

Yes RB! If you find a different (new?) prespective ”failing” is just one feedback! Thanks for the reminder! Have creative week!

Fantastic share, RB! Jordan Peele is one of my favorite directors. His stories, shots, and way of putting symbolism in his movies are incredible. In the first video Dev Patel and Jordan talk about having to throw out a plan on set and being willing to adapt. I think being willing to adapt is crucial for any director, writer, actor, etc. Excellent advice on how to deal with rejection! Rejection used to wreck me, but I see it as a challenge to get better now. Rejection still stings though. Thanks for sharing the videos!

It was so inspiring to hear Dev Patel say, “Wherever there’s a glimmer of light to see this thing through to get one more foot on the ladder...” He wasn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer. And then to hear Jordan Peele pushing himself beyond his comfort zone sealed the message of the day. Adapt to the chaos. Jordan Peele also used his comedic background where the goal is to appeal to everyone in the crowd. [Shoot for the entire audience!] My random notes read, “Writing and re-writing” “Emphasis on music,” and “The philosophy of a film.” Everything they said resonated. I learn every week from RB. “There’s no success without failure.” What did you learn to push you forward?” These are words to live by as a screenwriter. Keep learning and keep writing, but most importantly, adapt and never quit.

The story of MONKEY MAN, especially after the Netflix drop, is a lesson for all. If you can't draw inspiration there, I don't know what to say. And I agree, Tom Stohlgren. There's always an element of run before you can walk when it comes to screenwriters - and, to be honest, all creatives. But you have to get punched in the nose to learn how to avoid getting punched in the nose.
