An actor walks into an audition and says to him or herself, “If I don’t get this part, that’s it. I am giving up acting.”

The list of successful actors that have thought of quitting is long. **The path is filled with rejection. You have to know that.

Every time you put yourself out there, know that it may be "no" for now, but your big "yes" could be just around the corner. Today, I'm going to go over some famous faces that almost gave up, and, if they had, we'd miss out on some of the best characters on screen.

If you’ve chosen the path of acting, that’s because you either feel you’re good at it, or you’ve been told you’re good at it and you know deep in your heart you love it.

You have to remind yourself that acting is your passion and quitting would kill you. I was working with a student who was struggling with a demanding scene. He wanted to quit. So, I said to him, “What’s your plan B? What else are you good at?” He said “I would make a lot of money selling high-end cars”. So I told him, “OK, then embrace that profession, because that will be what you’ll be doing.” He winced in pain and in that moment he realized that he had to fight for plan A, because the possibility of plan B was too gut-wrenching to even think about. Acting was his dream, his only dream, the dream he needed to fight for. Today that actor stars on a major TV show.

Why Quitting Acting Is Not an Option

.

When you don’t get an acting job that you really want, it’s because it wasn’t right for you at that time and you have to believe that there’s something better coming.

Ty Burrell almost quit before landing Modern Family. He talked about being rejected all the time and then he found the job that changed his life. Jon Hamm would go down to the wire for big movies and he didn’t get them. Thank God he stuck it out. I can’t imagine another actor playing the iconic Don Draper on AMC's Mad Men.

You can audition five times for a movie that you’re right for, you get better each time and then someone else gets the part. It’s devastating. It’s also the name of the game. No, you didn’t get the part, but they brought you in five times because you were that good. That’s what you have to look at.

Henry Cavill got close to many jobs; I coached him for the part of James Bond. He was devastated when he put all of his heart and soul into a screen test and he didn’t get it, but if someone had told him that he was going to play Superman and that a lot of great roles were coming his way, I think that would have softened the blow.

Bottom line: You have to have faith.

Mary-Louise Parker said, “The world has gotten too mean for me, it’s just too bitchy. All the websites and all the blogging and all the people giving their opinion and their hatred… It’s sport for people, it’s fun to get on at night and unleash their own self-loathing by attacking someone else who they think has a happier life.”

It’s tougher today more than ever for an actor because of the Internet, so you have to develop a thick skin.

Uzo Aduba said, “The day I found out that I got Orange Is The New Black I actually had given up on acting. I had been trying to do it and was working in New York doing theater. I had been spending the summer - my first time trying - to do film and television and it was hard and I was, like, ‘maybe I’m not supposed to be this,’ you know? and then I got home and about an hour after that I found out I got this job.”

There are parts you are born to play and if you quit too early then you’ll never know.

So if you have talent and you have a passion for your talent you can never quit.

A fine and encouraging read. It's all about timing and there really is a great deal of fortuity involved.

Michelle Danner has put a very positive spin on this matter. I know a bunch of actors who thought about giving up, but this article provides what we all need. It's that "Never say Die" attitude. Great post. Thank you.

Ain't that the truth. You just made the greatest point ever. So many people allow themselves to get frustrated, and then, that eats away at them. We must do what is helpful, for us, to keep thinking positive. If you day-dream, then I say, keep doing it. Envisioning your success can make things happen...and then you're realizing your dream.

It's always about staying positive, Christopher. It's the negative thoughts that eat away at us, and we can't let those feelings keep us from what we want to achieve!

It is without question that in today's world one can compare job interviews in the mainstream employment market to that of an actors audition. If, for example a person had trained in finance and found themselves having to seek work, it would never be a consideration for them to give up what they had trained for if they had been unsuccessful finding work in their area of expertise. Everybody has to sell themselves at interviews; be it ability, qualifications or even personality. Actors are or should be no different. A trained actor knows that rejection is part and parcel of the career they have entered into. Our advice can be summed up in this quote from Winston S. Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Interesting post. And what I find fascinating are the people like Charlize Theron who was found in a bank, and I don't know how long it took to develop her acting skills, but her roll in Monster was amazing~! It's like she was an Actress all her life just waiting to happen, until she was found in that bank.. It's like all the hidden musical talent discovered day in and day out. Way to go Charlize~!

Great article! Thank you, Michelle! A good reminder! I have been following your website for years in the hope that I may be able to study with you, and this is another fantastic blog. As in all art forms, acting, and talent, are totally subjective, so it's sometimes easy to begin wondering if you're good enough, or whether it's what you're really meant to be doing here on this planet. For me, all I know is I can't imagine doing anything else. I have been fortunate enough to discover and develop many skills and passions outside of acting over the years, but when presented with the thought of having to do one of them every day for the rest of my life, I know I couldn't cope. I wouldn't be able to live with myself! That's not to say I haven't experienced those thoughts. I have, just as I know every other artist in the world has. We put our hearts and souls into our work, and are never guaranteed any success, so it's hard to not lose hope occasionally. But it is because of this - because we LOVE it - that we do what we do. Acting, performing, sharing, storytelling and entertaining... that is where my heart and soul lies. So, to all my fellow actors, storytellers, artists, dancers, musicians, singers, sculptors or handi-crafters, don't give up! Please keep dreaming! Have faith, and do what you love! We were all put here for a reason. My name may never be known outside my own circle of friends, but as long as I'm working, I know I'm where I'm meant to be. "For without passion, life is nothing."

Quite an inspirational blog Michelle! Thank you for sharing. Indeed, when you have been rejected several times, perseverance and passion are essential to withstand despondency. Once you've questioned yourself, you must cling resolutely to the conviction that the right moment will come. You must believe in yourself first of all. Then people will believe in you!

Can I quote this blog post in a book I'm writing about how to navigate the Internet and not let it get you down? To be published in 2016 by A Vegas Publisher. I'm going to cite positive examples of Internet behavior and Stage32 is definitely one I will highlight!

A little perspective on acting from someone who doesn't "need" to act. I got into acting completely by accident. I was in university in Mississippi in 1966 and it was the last thing I was interested in. I hated being the center of attention, but ...well that's too long a story for now. I ended up being ask to act and I didn't know how to say no so I agreed. It's now nearly 50 years later and I can honestly said I am not driven to act. That said, when I am in front of audience, be it live or a camera, and I am in character and playing a role communication some truth...I would pay to feel what I feel at that moment and the fact that I have been paid do act still surprises me. There are two reasons to act...you need to act to be truly alive....or like me, you don't need to act, there are many other ways (teaching, parenting, mentoring) that bring the same satisfaction, but when you find that acting not only is something to do, but it is something you would willingly to for free and someone is paying you...you've found a calling.

At one point in my career I was the President of the Union of BC Performers, who are the local of Actra in BC. As the President I was often asked to talk to students who wanted to be actors, and I always cautioned them, don't do it unless you have a passion otherwise it will break your heart. It took me a while to realize that the passion has to be there, but not necessarily a passion for "acting", but rather storytelling...you have something you are passionate about delivering to an audience, whomever that might be. I've spent the last decade teaching and realized, for me at least, teaching is to some degree acting in four hour blocks.

There are many examples of great personalities that have never given up, other than Actor's. The message is always the same. I WILL NEVER GIVE UP! As an Actor since age nine and a member of Sag-Aftra since 1978 I have never given up on my education, athletic competition, corporate career, advocacy, giving back to my community and my Acting career now pursuing script writing and Associate Producer status signatory to Sag-Aftra. Walking the picket lines to support our sister unions under the AFL-CIO is equaling as important issues for me. LEADERSHIP! I can only repeat the words my Grandfather said to me " Artists only Die and we leave our Legacy behind for others to follow in our Footsteps " Joe Jordan 1971. So, in my opinion, MENTORSHIP is the key for our Young Talent to continue their Acting careers with the same commitment of " I WILL NEVER UP "!
