About Joe

Transitioned from acting to screenwriting where I fell in love with the craft. I had to take a step back last year and face some hard truths. Up until then, I had written 3 big budget screenplays which have all been rated Recommend and have either won or placed as a finalist in numerous screenplay competitions. Normally, people with my level of success in screenwriting competitions, would either be signed, sold or optioned by now. I soon realized the reason why I wasn't achieving any kind of professional success, was because, as one producer told me, I was 'not feasible'. Seems writing $100 million dollar contest winning screenplays isn't going to get you to Hollywood any time soon when you are a newcomer and don't have any credits to your name. So, like I said, I had to step back and I had to do the ultimate... I had to write low budget.

I admit, at first it was daunting. I couldn't come up with any ideas set in just one location. Until I went back to an old 30 page story I had written, meant for a new Twilight Zone'ish Canadian TV show that never got off the ground. It was a thriller set in just one location; a house with a detached garage. And after some reworking and rewriting, I was able to turn my little idea into a full length thriller in just three months. I sent it out for coverage and got recommended. Six months later I would option it to a producer with an actual credit on IMDB who is currently trying to get it off the ground. Price tag? Less than $1 million. Since we don't have any contracts signed (I basically gave him a free option) my screenplay is still open to the public and can still qualify in screenwriting contests. All of a sudden, I was rejuvenated. Next thing I know, I'm finishing my second low budget script, a PG Family friendly story set again in one location and has also been rated Recommend. Price tag? Less than $1 million.

So now here I am, after ten plus years of learning how to write. And that's exactly what happened. Those 3 big budget screenplays which took a few years to finish, taught me how to write. I don't think of it as a waste of time, I think of it as my schooling years. As if I went to film school, but never got to go. I was able to finish 2 low budget screenplays in one year. Optioned the first and am just now showing the second one to the world. It seems and feels like I'm now just getting started, even though all this time has passed. And if you're still reading this and you're trying really hard to break into the screenwriting world, the best advice I can possibly give you is to write low budget. Minimal locations. Little or no effects. It's what everyone online is looking for. That's your best chance to actually sell your first screenplay as I've learned.
