I was born in two or three small log cabins that I helped my father build; sadly, he never got to see them completed, as he had died during childbirth two years before I was born. I was left alone to raise myself and my imaginary twin brother, until one day a roving pack of insane squirrels took pity on us and invited us to join their group. We lived with them for five years before they sold us to a small travelling circus. I don't hold any ill feelings toward them for that; times were tough, they needed the money, and hey, a buck fifty is a buck fifty, you know?
In the circus we worked as a trapeze act, my brother as catcher and me doing whatever you want to call the guy who isn't catching. We worked without a net. That was only natural, as Annette had nothing to do with the trapeze. She was one of the elephant handlers, and she had a special bond with those animals that nobody really understood. Personally I think the elephants just recognized a kindred heart, a kindred soul, and a kindred nose. I remember how she used to snuffle up a great load of water into that nose of hers, wait for someone to unsuspectingly wander by, then rear up and blast that water all over her "victim". Then she would run off, and laugh and laugh and laugh. Nobody really liked Annette.
