Online Pitchfest V: Literary Managers Stage 32 and The Happy Writers are excited to offer a unique opportunity to our screenwriters! We have lined up some amazing literary managers who will be listening to pitches of your scripts in one-on-one pitch sessions. These pitches can be done via Skype or, if you are unable to use Skype, can be submitted as a written pitch. ### Why should you pitch your script? All screenwriters are keenly aware of the dreaded "no unsolicited material" policy enforced by most prestigious management firms. It's not easy to get past the ivory gates without a referral. Due to our relationships, we are able to deliver to you the opportunity to sit one on one with some of the top literary managers around town each of which is looking for new writers and material! These pitches are one-on-one with the manager. You are in full control. It's your turn to shine! ### What screenwriters should be pitching? Any Stage 32 member with a screenplay they feel is ready to share with a professional literary manager. Anyone who is interested in pursuing management or representation as a professional screenwriter.

Jarrod Murray - Manager, Epicenter

Jarrod Murray is a partner at Epicenter. His clients have sold pilots to Fox, CBS, CW, Spike, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Netflix. He also has clients staffed on Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Rush Hour. Before opening up his own management company, Jarrod was the head of development at PCH Films, where he oversaw the production company's slate. He also served as the creative executive of Adelstein Productions where he set up spec script Hanna at Focus Features and The Necklace at Fox Searchlight.

Director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) is attached to direct an animated pilot of one of his clients. Rough House is attached to produce a feature from one of his clients as well. Their client Owen Egerton’s script The Boy was on this year’s Black List.

TIPS ON PITCHING TO JARROD:

  • Make sure your characterization is clear and layered. 
  • Highlight the distinctive quality of your story.
  • The hook must stand out. Spend a bit of time at the beginning succinctly clarifying what the hook of your story is.

Jennifer Au - Manager, Untitled Entertainment

Jennifer is a literary manager at Untitled Entertainment. Prior to working at Untitled Entertainment, Jennifer was a manager at Caliber Media. She spent four years at Untitled Entertainment, first as an assistant and then as a junior literary manager. Jennifer began her career working at an independent production company followed by time at The Firm and CAA. She is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Untitled Entertainment's clients include Emma Watson, Alexandra Daddario, Natalie Dormer, James Franco, Gal Gadot, and Eddie Redmayne.

Tips on pitching to Jennifer:

  • Make sure the emotionality of the characters are clear. That should be in the forefront of the pitch. 
  • What makes your story stand out? Highlight specific elements that gives your story distinction. 
  • Use actor comps when setting up main characters and use movie or TV comps when setting up the tone at the beginning.

Kendrick Tan is a Manager at Madhouse Entertainment. Madhouse Entertainment is a production and literary management company that works with screenwriters and writer/directors in the areas of film, television and new media.

Madhouse's focus is guiding the careers of it's clients from a creative standpoint, providing them with feedback from its many years of development and production experience as it relates to your current projects, future work, and assisting you in navigating the ever changing landscape of the entertainment industry. Its clients have projects in various stages of development at every studio and network, as well as in the increasingly viable world of independent film and cable TV.

In addition to managing its clients, Madhouse also produces. They have many projects in various stages of development in both television and film. Last year they released PRISONERS starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal which won critical acclaim. MURDER OF A CAT starring Fran Kanz and Nikki Reed is currently in production. Their feature GLIMMER with DreamWorks, starring Jeremy Allen White and Dylan O'Brien will begin production in 2014. Mary Cybriwsky produced Joe Dante’s BURYING THE EX, starring Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, Alexandra Daddario and Oliver Cooper, as well as executive produced STICKY NOTES starring Ray Liotta, Rose Leslie and Justin Bartha. Prior to opening production/management company Scooty Woop Entertainment in 2009 with Frankie Lindquist, Mary worked in all aspects of film development and production as an executive at Mosaic Media Group / Atlas Entertainment under the prolific producer Charles Roven and his team, on projects such as THE DARK KNIGHT, GET SMART, THE INTERNATIONAL, THE BANK JOB, amongst others.

Originally from Philadelphia, PA, and with a film production degree from Syracuse University, Ms. Cybriwsky’s fascination with film and television’s unique ability to influence the audience’s emotions drives her enthusiasm to work in entertainment. She’s passionate about creating unique, entertaining, and substantive content, as well as working with and breaking new writing and directing talent.
