Oy gevalt, when a New York family must celebrate Passover in Miami for the first time even four cups of wine might not be enough!
Logline: After a health scare forces her parents to extend their three-month stay in Miami, a progressive NY artist is forced to join her tradition-oriented family for an impromptu and disastrous Seder.
Sadie is a feminist artist. She’s an independent and focused woman, who isn’t interested in romantic relationships. But what her mother sees is a girl, with no profession, no husband, no safety net. Sadie’s mother is struggling with her own potentially imminent and unwanted independence and is unable to give Sadie the affirmation that she seeks. Mothers and daughters, we love each other (for the most part), and truly want what’s best for one another but each generation sees their own answers to this. The truth is we have a lot to learn from one another and are more resilient both alone, and together, than we know.
The Miami Seder captures the close, almost claustrophobic family tension of Shiva Baby and the loving lighthearted warmth of Keeping Up with the Steins to create a holiday family film that is relatable regardless of background. Perhaps unsurprisingly the idea for this screenplay came to me while spending time in the Dominican Republic with my mother and aunt, both incredible, knowledgeable and energetic eighty-somethings.
