There is a tense, electric atmosphere; despite their weary cynicism, the audience cannot help but wonder if what they've heard is true. The performer begins: he picks up a scalpel from the tray of medical equipment at his side, and starts to cut along the scarred side of his ribcage. Somehow he has blanked her out, and it bothers him. So he decides to set off on a voyage of mum-discovery, prodding friends and relatives to recount their memories of his often stormy relationship with her. At the same time he decides to run the London Marathon, dressed as a giant lemon. Which is the bigger challenge: to run a marathon or to let the memory of his mum back in his life?
