I watched the original Ranma 1/2 some months ago and it was a blast. Of course it also got a modern remake which has stronger colours and the actors coming back to reprise their roles.
Studying this side-by-side comparison of a pivotal scene (Akane’s haircut), there’s quite a bit similar and different between the versions. The original had the music and the actual frame getting cut alongside Akane’s hair, beautifully showing the shock of a surprise haircut, perfectly showing how Akane’s attempt to be more feminine failed. It’s cleaner in the remake, quicker, which means it also lacks drama. The shock is quieter, almost personal; it belongs entirely to Akane rather than all of us.
What do you think?
