I was thinking earlier today, I know it's a bad habit I have. If I had been unable to understand math would I still be able to be a musician? So I started thinking about just how much math is in music. It turns out that every part of music has something to do with mathematics. Geometry, calculous, algebra, even trigonometry. 1/(2π f r) is the formula to calculate wave length, in music it would be just exactly how long the sound wave of the note, "A 440" is This is how we measure the length of the string to make said note. Not to mention writing music, things like timing, rests, beats, rhythm, tempo, have all been mathematically divided by music theory. Please note, music theory is a simple observation and NOT a rule, just as mathematics is an abstract expression of observation through symbols and equations. One can make a mathematical equation to prove anything, so can you make any music and there is a written theory to express it. What I'm really trying to say is, math and music theory are one and the same, an abstract expression of an observation, not a rule. So go out there and make some funky sounds!!!! Don't worry about if it fits the theory.
