Tackling the unfamiliar concepts

I was always a staunch proponent of sticking to something I know. I even wrote a sci-fi script bringing front and center the unsung profession of insurance adjusting. But as I realized, the problem with doing the usual is stagnation. Now I embarked on a journey into the realm I know nothing about, and it is a blast. I am working on a feature treatment entitled The Imposter Syndrome. A complete wreck single mother unable to hold a relationship and unsuccessfully juggling 4 part-time jobs while failing at everything is getting her life together. Not a shred of Action, Comedy or Sci-Fi anywhere in sight, not even a movie I would voluntarily watch. But it is an enriching and eye-opening experience. Has anyone else had similar experiences?
