Most writers who come to meet me tell me that one of their goals is getting an agent. But getting an agent is not really within your control, is it? In order to set your roadmap to success, you have to decipher what is and isn't within your control, and make plans for your screenwriting career accordingly. http://leejessup.com/general-career-advice/setting-effective-career-goal...

I bought Lee's book "Getting It Write" and highly recommend it. It covers all the basics of the business aspect of screenwriting. If you know everything in that book when you go to a manager, the commitment to the business will come through in your conversations and you will be respected.
Thank you guys! This actually is something that was born of an organic conversation with one of my writers who felt like he was doing the right things, but frustrated because he was looking for results that just weren't within his control and measuring his success accordingly. We talked about goals vs. aspirations, and he asked me to write the blog so... here we are!!!
