I've always felt this. And while I can understand that the more elaborate costumes tend to draw more awe from viewers, sometimes I watch a contemporary film and think, "That is the perfect shirt for them." which really says a lot, given that often our attention isn't meant to be drawn to the clothes of the characters.

It's a bit like dance versus acrobatics ... when it's done well, it disappears from awareness, whereas in the fantasy and period pieces, it's all saying "look at me, look at me". Makes you wonder who is doing the judging...
