Screenwriting : I wrote a biopic recently... by Mark William Chambers

I wrote a biopic recently...

My question is about rights. For researching purposes I used a book my Grandfather wrote and the story is about him. When I enter contests they say your story must be the original work of the author. Where is the dividing line? The book itself doesn't tell the story they're just snippets of his career. I came up with my own story line to tell the best way possible. The book was merely a guide to help with factual events. Any help here?

Also, they have these rules that your original screenplay can't be based off part of whole of a novel. Then how do you write true stories? How do you write non fiction?

Arnaud Talaia

Using a book as source material doesn't make your script an adaptation as long as you don't specifically use the story line of the book, its phrasing or its title. Based on what you said you should be hood to go and call it an orginal screenplay.
