I was contemplating adapting a friends book into a movie, but soon realized I have no clue what the dos and do nots are of adapting a full length book into a two hour film. So can anyone help guide me? Or at the most give me a helpful outline of what works best.

Normally it is better start with the core story you want to tell, and try to edit the story based on your core story. Other way is following the hero, cut the non-important part. Our company currently is adapting a German novel, the writer only kept the main story and totally re-write.
