Screenwriting : Genre Specific by Antonio James Casci

Genre Specific

I was recently rereading an old script I wrote when I was twelve. The movie was written as a comedy and I decided to rewrite it as such. However I can't seem to write it as a comedy, only a drama. Then I realized everything I'm writing/ written is a drama or a dramatic comedy (i.e Dan in Real Life, Martian Child, Man on the Moon, etc). Does anyone else have this problem? Is it better to be talented in one genre than good in all of them? Also are studios more inclined to hire writers who can write well in all genres than those who can write the best in a specific genre? T.Y.A Antonio

Drama is the default for all genres. So every screenplay is a drama, but most (almost all) are drama plus some other genre. http://www.scriptsecrets.net/tips/tip76.htm

Respectfully agree with William and Joey. Don't try to be a jack of all trades, master of none. If a studio wants to hire a writer for an Action OWA (Open Writing Assignment), they want the best action writer they can find for the project. If you are remodeling a house, you hire an electrician for the electrical, a tile guy for the tile, a plumber for the plumbing, etc. You don't hire a handyman and hope he does "ok" in all areas. Same with studio writing gigs. Also true for actors. If Disney XD is casting a mad scientist, they want to hire the best mad scientist. You're not going to get cast as both mad scientist and truck driver. So play to your strengths.

I am hearing you say is that your work has a Antonio James Casci voice and style. Nothing wrong with that.

Antonio: Wow! You wrote a script when you were twelve? That's amazing. Personally, I will tackle all genres. However, for now, you may wish to write what you feel you know best. Otherwise, if you want to write comedy, study up on some great comedic scripts to get an idea how they're put together. There's also a fair amount of material out there on structuring comedy: Try these links on for size: http://www.movieoutline.com/articles/the-4-rules-of-comedy-writing-for-s... http://scribemeetsworld.com/2012/plot-points/screenwriting-structure-bri...
