If you want to get "fresh" influences of good TV and Screen writing, I recommend going back to the black and white era. For TV, try late 50's and early 60's. For Film, try the 40's and into the 50's. What you will often find is a strong focus on how character dilemma drives the conflict. Also, conflict had a different meaning then. Characters are often put into difficult corners by contrasting the good they want to do verse the needs they have. This can be so much more intense and have more nuance than what we often see in modern productions. Modern productions, I find to me more 'in your face', very bald and unimaginative, and, ironically, more black and white in what they see conflict to be. For example, "Andy Griffith Show" or "Dyke van Dyke Show". I pull those out because of my interest in comedy, but there is SO much more. That said, any thoughts? Recommendations?
