I am wondering if my strategy is going to work. Right now I am trying to raise a little money (5K) so I can hire the actor's, get costumes made etc and film the 1st 5 - 10 minutes of a feature film I am working on. I have the gift of being able to see this stuff in my head. Its based on an MMORPG of which I am sure once the fan base sees this come to life it will be successful. Its the whole bringing it to life part I am having a hard time dealing with. Has anyone ever used this strategy before? Has it worked? Is there something better?
Less is more. If you have $5K you should keep it as seed money... even use it as primer to help get your own crowdfund moving, or to finish it off in the 11th hour if you are near the goal but shy. Or you might spend it entirely on shooting a look / style piece to suggest the film, not necessarily tease it. The " having a hard time bringing it to life" is a much more telling issue you should address well before crowdfunding efforts. All creative people can see a thing in their head... it's the "vision" we all read about. But filmmaking ( directing ) is mostly about communicating a vision effectively to actors and crew so the puzzle pieces can be built and assembled by others... not by the director. Nothing is more frustrating than a shoot where a director can't communicate their vision. I have seen a new director stare at the monitor, silently, and literally say " it doesn't look like the movie in my head!" Well, what does that look like ? Everyone is waiting for YOU. Sometimes, making it look like something a talented team can create together is a better goal for a new filmmaker. Lastly, an entertainment lawyer might be consulted; if the game upon which this film is based is owned and you are not a licensee, even fan films can be quashed before made.
