Best Movie Segues

I think the line in Big Jake when Maureen O"hara says, "it is I think going to be a rather harsh and unpleasant business and is going to take a rather harsh and unpleasant man to do it," ,,,then we segue to John Wayne peering down the sights of his rifle. Your thoughts???

Hi Gary! Without a doubt, the empty hallways of Yasujiro Ozu's postwar films are the most interesting to me. Maybe not segues exactly, but certainly scene transitions. He'll shoot a dialog scene, usually between two people, and it typically takes place in a living room. As the dialog scene draws to a close, Ozu often would cut to a camera looking straight down a hallway that is just off of the living room. The hallway would invariably be empty. And Ozu would let the camera hang on that shot for about four seconds. Ultimately, I feel he's offering the audience a few seconds to pause and reflect on what just happened, a sort of meditative moment so to speak. As it turns out, they're highly pleasing to watch. Interestingly, those four seconds are significant. Ozu was a fan of Hollywood films, and especially John Ford films, of which John Wayne was often a star. Ozu observed in a John Ford film a shot that he admired, and he timed it. It was four seconds, and he said that was just about perfect. BFI scholar Kogonada put together a one minute video on vimeo featuring the hallways of Ozu. He compares hallways side by side, because they also serve as repeating motifs in his films. Most of the shots in the video feature people, but if you spend the minute watching the video, near the end you'll see Ozu's trademark empty hallways, which I speak of here. fascinating. nicely done and rather catching i might add. Also we know it takes the brain 4 seconds to absorb what the eye sees. so he was able to combine the best of both the visual and synaptic world, well done. And i am indeed a fan of all things JW and Ford. I had the opportunity, if you call it that, to be in a film as an extra with JW and later i was shod one of his horses.

Speaking of Wayne, I had the opportunity to be tipped by his wife Pilar once many years ago. That's about as close as I ever came! And speaking of segues, I think the most famous is probably Kubrick's bone cut, where the ape throws the bone up into the sky in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and then cuts to the satellite a million years later. Here is the scene in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtbOmpTnyOc
