It makes complete sense to me. I'm surprised they offered purchase protection in the first place. Crowdfunding comes with no guarantee that the product will ever actually get made, or that it will get made to the original specs advertised. So purchase protection doesn't really make much sense for anyone involved, and the contributor should understand the risks of crowdfunding prior to contributing.
