From Promo Producer to Writer

Hi All, I'm new to Stage 32 and just wondering if anyone had any advice or experience going from a (somewhat related) outside profession to screenwriting? I'm a Promo Producer / Writer / Director with 17 years experience that's looking to transition to screenwriting, solely. Here's my reel, if anyone is interested in taking a peek - https://www.behance.net/gallery/26942761/RGD2-REEL-RYAN-COMPILATION Cheers, Ryan

Learn the screenplay format. Software like Celtx, Final Draft and Writer's Duet do it for you.

Here is a few ground rules to get started:

1. Only what we see and hear. Imagine the movie of your story in your head. The opening shot, what does it look like? What do we hear?

2. All scenes must start with a slugline. You first must notate if the scene is indoors or outdoors (INT. or EXT.) The name of the place (Restaurant) and the time of day (Day/Night, dawn, dusk, evening). An example looks like this:

INT. Red Robin Diner - Day

If you have a specific year, put that after the day in parentheses.

INT. Red Robin Diner - Day (2006).

3. When you are introducing a character, the name must be capitalized. The next line should be what the character looks like or is wearing. You can notate age if you need to in parentheses right after the name.

4. No shot or editing direction please. The only time you should write in shot direction is if you are the director and you are re-writing it to be a Production Script. If not, no shot direction.

5. Dialouge is centered and it follows under a character's capitalized name.

5.5. If your character is talking off screen, use (V.O) or (O.S) for Voice-Over/Off Screen to notate it.

Hope this helps.
