Screenwriting : Logline Question by John Ravitz

Logline Question

I've written a six episode TV series and I'm about to start sending out the script of the Pilot to some folks. I have the Pilot's Logline finished but I've been told that I should also include a Logline for the entire series, a series summery and a brief description of each of the characters. Is it good practice to attach those items as a stand alone document that follows the cover letter ?

John:

You need one logline for the series. You need one pilot episode ready. If you're very serious about selling your pilot, you may wish to consider writing a show bible, which includes the following:

1. Your series logline.

A show synopsis with the direction of where you're going, including brief character arcs for your main characters.

2. Brief character main character descriptions that are no more than a short paragraph.

3. A brief synopsis for each episode in your first season, I would say a minimum of 8 episodes to take you out of mini-series territory. Each episode synopsis should be no more than five paragraphs.

Also do some research. I've provided some good article links below:

Are covers letters necessary for pilot specs? Ask your Rep for help and if you don't have a Rep, ask Writers who have SOLD tv specs. Use social media, contact showrunners. Jeff Lieber (LOST) and Javier Marxuach (LOST) share their knowledge for free. Present your materials like them.
