Can Someone Enlighten me about Pitches & Pilots?

It's been a long time since I posted here. But I'm back! Life got in the way, and doubts, and frustrations, but I can't stop writing. My latest set of characters have joined the rest, who want OUT of my cranium and onto paper.

I have an idea for a 13-episode series. Do I write the Pilot and a couple of episodes and then pitch? Ive scoured the usual places and I'm still confused! Can the Pilot be the first episode? Does it introduce all the main characters in one episode that will never be shown again? Ugh. Please help!

Hi Karen, before you think about the # of episodes you should write your first script and then do the re-writes and try to get professional feedback before you try to sell it. Write a pilot or an episode because if it's good enough to become a tv series the producers will know it by the one or the other. But, before you show it to anyone you should register it. My advice is to do one step after the next. As soon as your script is polished and you got positive professional feedback you can begin to pitch it. So, don't spend too much time thinking about things. Good luck!

Elisabeth thank you. I do spend too much time thinking about things. Register it with the WGA? Your advice has certainly helped, I can now concentrate on the first episode which will be the pilot. Thanks again.

Sounds like a plan Dan. Thanks!

Karen, best register at LoC. Costs a little more, but is safer than the WGA as the LoC registration is more accepted when it should come to court. https://www.copyright.gov/registration/https://www.copyright.gov/registr...
