What does it mean specifically if an agent or producer is interested in "Genre Material"? How do you know which genre?

I have always thought of that as Horror, SciFi things that are genre heavy.
“Genre material” means familiar stories told in familiar ways. The material fits the bill. When an audience goes to see a genre film they know immediately and reasonably what to expect. No mixing of genres or adding anything unfamiliar that could confound or disappoint. Hope that helps! ;)
