Introduce Yourself : Screenplays as literature by Neil Geisler

Screenplays as literature

Hello, my name is Neil Geisner. I am interested in writing screenplays, but screenplays as works of literature to be published (what I call filmscrawls or scrells, a term I invented, not even screenplays). In today's environment, it is insanely hard to sell to agents and producers, and even then, hard to get any projects off the ground as films. I believe today that films have kind of replaced novels as our main form of consumption, narrative-wise, and I think that reading is essential. I find that writing screenplays as literature is a way to combine readership with cinema in a way that is both a hybrid experience & a different experience from reading a novel and watching a movie. I think filmscrawls are the literature of the future.

Yeah. That's def interesting. I know of one other writer who self-published a script for Amazon Kindle to sell for a couple bucks. I'm not 100% sure what the market among the general-public to read scripts is. Probably not very high but who knows down the line.

That being said "Studios, you should still provide your movie-script files for free because the only ones looking for them are probably aspiring/screenwriters and it's to your benefit that they improve". :D
