Introduce Yourself : Screenwriter by Joni Gilbert

Happy Saturday Everyone!

2019 has been a great year. My screenplay received a recommend from coverage, and I completed a Master Screenwriting program. Luckily, I travel a lot for business (and for fun) and I discovered these lovely little pockets of time in airport lounges, on my commutes and on every plane trip to work out dialog, elevate scenes and read and read and read more scripts for inspiration.

I started writing seriously three years ago when my son (then 8) had a writing project at school. I like to work and learn side by side with him, and told him I always wanted to expand beyond my personal writing and try screenwriting to learn how to write a movie. He turned to me and said, "That is so cool, Mom. You should write one tonight, and we can talk about it over breakfast tomorrow." Oh, the innocence and inspiration. Turns out, I did write a two page outline that night and found an online class from ScreenwritingU that started that next day. That outline became my first screenplay, and I completed two programs and I haven't looked back. I now have a great Master Class team I meet with weekly, I am expanding network daily on social media and in person and am inspired by all of creativity, support and enthusiasm for filmmaking I find there.

Over the past few years,I have become a regular at the wonderful Seattle Film Summit - if you haven't you should. It brings together LA and Seattle film folks in meaningful ways - to learn, build your network, explore, and get inspired. I also get to spend lots of time in LA also (blended family thing) and try to attend film events around town as often as I can. I am so excited about completing more projects in 2020 and beyond and getting to know more of you.

Cheers!
