HI, I am hoping that some of you in this lounge may have words of wisdom about using music in a taped online class. While it's not a film or tv show, it would be "out there" to some extent as a paid online course I am developing to help everyone in isolation.
I am putting together an online dance class and as I was rehearsing routines, it dawned on me that I might need to check on whether I have to get music rights to have background music as I am teaching. Normally of course, dance instructors always use music in class. That is sort of the whole idea. Choreography to it. I have never run across an issue teaching in person but was wondering if things change, legally, if I put classes online.
So I have a few specific questions about this:
1. Do I need to get the rights to use any music at all behind me talking on tape while I teach? What if it's a free class as opposed to a paid one?
2. Do I only need rights to current songs or from a certain year up to now?
3. If the songs are very very old and have been covered by dozens of bands, does it really matter?
4. Is it better to just go forward and wait to see if anything comes from me using the music since I don't know how big of an audience this project will ultimately have?
5. And what could come from it if I take that route? A letter to cease and desist? An actual lawsuit? A plea for money?
6. what sort of cost would I be looking at per song do you think if I need to get rights? Or a range of cost..
Thank you so much in advance for your help and advice!
Keep safe and keep creative!
Colette
