Make films about things you love. I love the artsy stuff. Terence Malick is my favorite, though his last few films have been disappointing. I'm an old hack at filmmaking with over 20 years of experience. I've ridden the transition from celluloid to digital and love that fact that it's so much simpler to make a film now than in any other time. So, hello to my brave fellow filmmakers.
