I fancy myself an artist and a writer. As an artist, I need a portfolio that shows I can draw. Different styles, characters, etc; most of it not my IP. Do screenwriters do the same thing? Do you write a pilot for a show which may never see the light of day just for your portfolio, or is that a waste of time?

I have they do. I have also heard people want to see original ideas. I don’t write TV, but I have heard both from various sources.
