Introduce Yourself : Hate Groups by Bruce Sprague

Bruce Sprague

Hate Groups

Provocative title, yes. But one that's relevant. One reason it's on my mind is because I've just finished reading a book about hate groups in America. I don't want to mention the name because I don't want to sound as if I'm promoting the book. But I believe this is an issue we, as creatives, need to explore. The subject is very timely and we need to understand the ins and outs, the psychologies, of who gets involved in these groups and why.

Now that I've read the book, I understand their mindset better and, should I decide to build a story around this, I'll be better able to create more believable characters and story lines.

What we, as artists, need to remember is that people in hate groups aren't monsters; they're lost and alienated, as are many of us, and they are led to believe that they have found a community that understands them. That's their greatest appeal...and their greatest danger.

Totally agree, Bruce. Realizing the root of people, help us to better understand them. Onward and upward.
